ABOUT

Nestled in the heart of the South East Rand sits an airfield with history dating back since its establishment in 1953. Central to the Brakpan, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg metro, this airfield is well situated for businessman visiting the East Rand. Being only 17km’s from OR Tambo International Airport makes this airfield suitable for a central point of transfer for local flights. The beautifully renovated clubhouse now boasts a restaurant, lounge, pub and outside braai area. With the apron and runway in plane site, pun not intended, this airfield is an aviators and enthusiasts dream. The tarred runway is 1440m excluding the 180m stop-ways at both ends and heading 18/36. There are presently three flight schools at the airport, jointly training some 120 new pilots per year. Many commercial and air transport pilots are also trained here and quite a number of airline captains had their tutelage at Brakpan airfield. The chief flight instructor Mr Seymore Lugg, known to most as Sluggy, has been involved at the airfield since 1961 and is a legend in the aviation fraternity.
With all the hustle and bustle of ongoing training and business conducted at the airfield, Brakpan Airfield is still a place where families can gather under the trees and enjoy the sights and sounds of the airfield while enjoying a hearty breakfast from the restaurant or braaing on a weekend after some flying action or just be with friends. The committee at Brakpan Aero Club are working extremely hard at uplifting the airfield and organising events to attract visitors from across the country to this beautiful airfield. New hangars are being erected and recently the club gained the membership of a few Alouette helicopter owners from Petit airfield to now grace the skies over Brakpan. There are now 3 Alouette II and 1 Alouette III helicopters based at Brakpan Airfield together with nearly 200 other operational aircraft. As a bonus to the club there is a beautiful fenced swimming pool for those hot summer days and for all to enjoy while dad’s flying! Family, flying and camaraderie at the airfield is apparent and look out for all the events that will be hosted at this fantastic Airfield. Interesting fact: The Brakpan Airfield has been active since 1927.
